*This is the fourth post in the Energy Healing blog post series:

In this post, we’ll be exploring various energy healing techniques and modalities. This was challenging to write because there are countless ways to influence our energy. While I’ll focus on established energy healing practices, it's important to recognize that simple activities, like reading a book in the sunshine, can positively affect your energy. We don’t always need official healing methods to feel better—changing our thoughts to something neutral or positive can also help us energetically.

Over time, if we allow energy imbalances to persist, they can lead to physical, mental, or emotional issues. It’s essential to be aware of this and take care of ourselves in any way we can. Today, I’ll cover some formal energy healing techniques, but remember that even something as simple as taking a walk outside on a beautiful day can be a form of energy healing.

5 Powerful Energy Healing Techniques

Reiki

First, let’s talk about Reiki. If you’re familiar with energy healing, you’ve likely heard of Reiki. As I mentioned earlier, I am a Reiki practitioner. Reiki involves connecting with something greater than ourselves. It's non-denominational, meaning it can align with any personal beliefs you might have. If you don’t believe in a higher power, Reiki might not appeal to you, but if you do, you can incorporate your beliefs into the practice.

Whether you use Reiki on yourself or others, the idea is to channel positive energy from a higher source—whether that’s God, the universe, spirit, or love—into your body or someone else’s. This can be done through intention or by placing your hands on the body. For example, if a client comes to me struggling with grief, I might channel love and light from a higher source and send it through my hands into their body. Essentially, it’s like a focused, specific form of prayer.

Reiki can be practiced in a formal session with a practitioner, where they spend an hour giving you healing energy through touch. However, it can also be as simple as sending love and light to someone in need, even if you’re just observing them in a grocery store. The focus is on the intention of sending healing energy to restore balance within them.

Sound Healing

Sound healing is another powerful energy healing method that captivated me. Unlike Reiki, where I assess energy with my hands, sound healing uses audible tools like singing bowls or tuning forks. When you move a singing bowl over someone’s body, the sound changes when it passes over areas with different energy. This tangible evidence of energy imbalances, something you can hear, fascinated me. It’s not necessary to use sound to manipulate energy, as even our thoughts can influence energy. However, tools like singing bowls can help us not only identify but also restore energy balance.

Sound is increasingly being used to treat conditions like Alzheimer’s. For instance, if you place two identical tuning forks next to each other and strike one, the other will start vibrating. Our bodies similarly resonate with specific frequencies. For example, if our body’s ideal balance is at 128 Hz, placing a tuning fork of that frequency on our body helps restore balance and calmness. A simple practice could be carrying a 128 Hz tuning fork and using it during stressful moments to regain balance.

Acupressure/Emotional Freedom Technique (Tapping)

Acupuncture and acupressure are additional methods I want to discuss, although they are not my specialties. However, I do use a tool related to these practices called Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). EFT involves tapping on acupressure points to reprogram your body’s response to stress. It’s an easy, effective way to find balance and ease. When you're feeling stressed, you can tap on specific points on your body while acknowledging the issue at hand. This practice helps reprogram your body’s energy to feel differently.

A book I recommend on this topic is The Tapping Solution by Nick Ortner. It’s a comprehensive guide to EFT, including scientific research supporting its effectiveness. Studies have shown that tapping can reduce stress levels by 43% in less than 10 minutes. It’s a powerful tool that’s accessible to anyone, anytime. I’ve used it with my own family, including my 16-year-old daughter, who found it very helpful in managing her stress.

Breathwork

Breathwork is another valuable practice with various modalities, each bringing different results. Whether you want to increase energy or achieve calmness, breathwork is a powerful tool we always have at our disposal. One simple practice is Square Breathing, where you inhale for four counts, hold for four, exhale for four, and hold the exhale for four before repeating.

Meditation

Finally, I want to mention meditation, which is another effective way to work with your energy and find balance. Some JAMA Network research has begun exploring the physiological mechanisms behind meditation's benefits. For instance, studies have investigated how meditation influences stress-related biomarkers and brain function, suggesting that meditation might positively affect areas of the brain associated with self-regulation and emotional processing.
